The one number feature is likely to be of great benefit to anyone that has to stay in constant contact. Similar to millions I opened a Gmail account shortly after launch and can still find any email from that time. I still have yet to make any impact in the sizable storage allocated to my mailbox. Now with their new voice service they can add information on every call you have ever received and dialed on your new Google number. One thing Google is not lacking in beside money and online clout is data storage space.

As far as I know Google has never done anything untoward with this data but the point is it is there. Government agencies all over the world would love to have access to this information all under the guise of anti-terrorism measures. This might sound a bit melodramatic but the Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act of 2010 bill tabled in the Us senate would give the president and his security agencies the power to shut down the internet or police it if a vaguely worded national cyber emergency was declared.

And as we all know were America goes most of the Western world soon follows. In one potential future if a similar bill was soon tabled in the European Union and elsewhere. Would you be so keen to have all this information freely available to shady government agencies?

People might be under the illusion that they have control over their accounts and be able to just delete any information that might compromise them. But anyone that knows the workings of computers would know that is not true. If for example some shady agency was watching your mailbox, recently deleted mails would be the first thing they would retrieve.

I don't think anyone can argue with the fact that Google Voice brings the company closer to complete and irreversible command of the internet. However being an optimist and interested in new technology I applaud Google's new venture. And will likely be first in line if and when it is released worldwide. Nevertheless I will be keenly aware that I will be substantially adding to my electronic fingerprint.
